Prolific Gaming
Written by Arthur | Wednesday, 19 March 2008

The 2 months have been some very prolific gaming times for me!  I do believe I've played more stuff in that time than all the 5 years prior combined.  Almost every week I got out for one game or two (or three -- can you believe it?).

Anyhow, I'll start with with Confrontation sessions.  I had only played one or two games of Confrontation v3 previously, and that was over a year ago.  So hard to find players here!

The first game we played was about 2 months ago.  I actually have detailed session report here:

Anyhow, in summary if you don't read it:

3 of us and we played the Pigeon scenario (basically capture the objective token and hold it the longest)

  • 400 pts warband each (Acheron, Wolfen (me), Devourers)
  • Triangle board (yes, triangle...)
  • I won by capturing the pigeon first and holding it for the game, sacrificing the rest of my warband.  Plus the Devourers player was out to get the Acheron and less interested in the actual objective (they are good friends already).

Last week we played another game.  It was just the Acheron player and me, and neither of us had the scenarios so we just redid pigeon.

I had scouts, so deployed close to the objective (and luckily he had placed some blocking terrain around it so he was prevented from getting to my guys easily).

Acheron had a hard time getting to me even though he had fliers; they were a quite fragile.  I should have been more careful plunging my guys into him though.  Will have to work that those strategies.

We didn't get to finish ... played about 2 hrs and only got to the top of turn 5.  He was actually working my guys pretty good -- I would have won the scenario by objectives/points, but I probably would have had only 2 guys standing by the end of the game while he would have about 30% of his force.

I played the similar force as above but swapped out the great fang and tracker for Kaeliss the elf archer.  That was a mistake.  He missed all his shots -- even with his high AIM 5 skill.

Lessons learned: Long range shooting is pointless; spend a turn to move closer.  Also with Confrontation 3.5 spellcasting is so cheap even wolfen should try to take advantage of it.

Coming up soon:  Recap of Heroclix games and Star Wars minis!

Painted stuff over the break
Written by Arthur | Tuesday, 15 January 2008

Well... that was long break from the last update made here.

Besides spending some time in Kauai, got some warhammer gaming in the past few months at the expense of clixing and star wars minis.

Posted some Lord of the rings rangers in the a gallery here, and also some more ringwraiths and stuff at CMON to generate some income to fund the hobby and keep the high council (e.g. wife) happy.

Neverwinter: Baruk Khazad-dum
Written by Arthur | Monday, 22 October 2007
As a last hurrah before I finally unistall Neverwinter nights 1 (it has bloated to almost 8GB with all the haks and mods!), I'm giving Hythum II a try.  The main reason is I've always wanted to check out the dwarven halls tileset, and this seems to be the only single player mod using it -- well, one that has a good reputation at least.

It's a fun dungeon crawl -- the story is basically inspired from the mines of moria from Fellowship of the Ring.  Even the dwarf names are similar to those in LOTR -- personally I've always thought they sounded a little pansy, i.e. Gimli, Fili, etc, though to sidetrack further I have a great uncle-in-law who's name is Gim Lee who not only is a great guy but also has a great name I must say.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for eye candy, but the visuals make all the difference.  I've prolly tried close to a hundred different modules, and some have had great stories to keep be interested, but mainly I get bored of them because of the look.  With the original campaign, I was bored of the visuals by the midpoint (which doesn't happen to me usually, even old games like Baldur's gate and very old RPGs kept me enthralled the whole time visually).

It's not just the fact that tiles are getting reused, but the fact the engine uses the standard Gygaxian 10x10x10 square so every location plays out the same.  To me, another issue is that the artwork is too stylized -- i.e. if the cities and dungeons were more generic looking, I wouldn't think I'm returning to the same spot and would my suspension of disbelief would continue more smoothly.

Anyhow, so the dwarven halls hak is still 10x10, but at least the height changes much more and gives that much more depth -- though the engine does seem to have a lot of problems with high walls and narrow corridors.  The texture design is done well.

Well... I didn't realize I would dwell on this so much.
